I just have to share this small excerpt from this story. I read a few comments on the internet, and I agree... this book along with so many others should be part of Black History curriculum... along with the documentary Eyes on the Prize.
["The Northern Negroes are different," returned the judge.
"They are just the same," rejoined the colonel. "It is you who are different. You pamper them and they take liberties with you. But they are all from the South, and when they meet a Southerner they act accordingly. They are born to serve and to submit. If they had been worthy of equality they would never have endured slavery. They have no proper self-respect; they will neither resent and insult, nor defend a right, nor avenge a wrong."
"Well, now, colonel, aren't you rather hard on them? Consider their past."
"Hard? Why, no, bless your heart! I've got nothing against the nigger. I like him - in his place. But what I say is the truth. Are you in a hurry?"]
And the story goes on.... See, it's that old truth, that a history forgotten is bound to be repeated. And now that Obama has become president, we're seeing a swell of these old, ignorant, hateful attitudes being expressed like bad gas with excrement.
